How to See Who Clicks Your Links Without Any Coding

You posted a link. Did anyone click it? Many people never find out, because they think tracking needs code or a complicated tool. It does not. If you use a short link, the click counting is done for you. The hard part is understanding what the numbers mean, so let us go through it in simple steps.

How click tracking works

When someone clicks a short link, their browser first visits the short link service, and then gets sent on to the final page. This happens in a split second. During that visit, the service can note a few basic things, such as the time, the rough location, the type of device and the page where the click came from. You do not need to add anything to your own website for this to work. We explain the details in how URL shorteners work.

What you can usually see

  • Total clicks: how many times the link was opened.
  • Location: which countries or cities the clicks came from. This is a rough guess based on the internet connection, so treat it as an estimate.
  • Device and browser: phone or computer, and which browser. This helps you decide whether your page needs to work well on mobile.
  • Referrer: where the click came from, such as a social app, an email or a website.
  • Time: which days and hours get the most clicks.

Step by step: your first tracked link

  1. Make a short link for the page you want to share, using the short URL tool.
  2. Share that short link in only one place first, for example your newsletter.
  3. Wait a day or two, then open your analytics to see the clicks.
  4. Try again with a different link in another place and compare the results.

Use a different link for each place

This is the single best habit. If you use one link everywhere, you only get one total. If you use a different short link for WhatsApp, Instagram and email, you can see which one performs best. It costs nothing extra and takes seconds.

Total clicks and unique clicks

Total clicks count every click, even if the same person clicks five times. Unique clicks try to count each person once. If your total is much higher than your unique number, many people are opening the link repeatedly. That can be good, for example when people come back to a guide, or it can mean something is confusing.

Some clicks are not real people

Here is something many beginners miss. Some apps open links automatically to build a preview card. Security scanners and email filters also check links before a person sees them. These visits can show up as clicks, so your number may be a bit higher than the real count. Do not be upset if a link has a few clicks right after you send it. It is normal. The trends over time matter more than one exact number.

Do not read too much into small numbers

If a link gets 6 clicks on one day and 9 on another, that is not a big difference. Wait until you have more data before making a decision. Look for patterns across many days, not single moments.

Connect clicks to results

A click is only the first step. What you really want to know is what people did after that. Did they sign up, buy something or read the page? To see this, add UTM tags to your link so your website analytics can tell where visitors came from. Our UTM guide shows how, and the UTM Builder does the work for you.

What to do with what you learn

  • If one place brings many clicks, share more there.
  • If most clicks come from phones, check that your page loads fast on mobile.
  • If clicks peak in the evening, send your messages at that time.
  • If a link gets very few clicks, try a clearer message around it before blaming the link.

Respect your visitors

Tracking should be honest. Tell people in your privacy policy what you collect, and never use the data to make people feel watched. Good tracking helps you improve. It should not feel creepy.
